This site is called the East River Generating Station. It was built in 1926; it burned coal and released soot through its towering smokestacks until the late 1960s. It has since switched to burning oil and natural gas, which power electrical turbines for the city, and steam heat that is pumped below the road into iron radiators all over Manhattan below 89th (on the east side) and 96th (on the west side). The steam, which is made from water that is gathered and purified on-site, also powers several other industrial novelties throughout Manhattan like steam-based air conditioners, hospital sterilization equipment, dry cleaning machines, and MoMA's humidity control system.

Throughout the 2000s this facility was upgraded to nearly double its former generating capacity. Explosions here in 2002 and in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy led to rolling blackouts throughout the city. Multi-billion dollar projects to shore up its flood protection have been repeatedly proposed, attempted, and failed since then by both federal and state officials.

Although many other power plants throughout NYC have begun modifying for a switch to renewable energy, no such concrete plans have been made for this facility, which still burns oil but is mainly burning liquid natural gas at this point. Its continued use of hazardous materials has been linked to higher rates of cancer, mesothelioma and asthma among longtime East Villagers and plant workers. Fuel and system efficiency upgrades have allowed it to gradually burn fossil fuels more "cleanly" over the past century, but it remains one of the worst air polluters in the entire state of New York.

In September 2022, Con Ed apparently updated its website. An unexpected and unchecked occurrence is the result. If you have multiple accounts under one log in AND pay from different bank accounts... your pay from banks may no longer be aligned to the correct Con Ed service accounts. But to exacerbate the issue, Con Ed lacks a Technical Support facility and therefore to report this issue and to get a timely response it was necessary to escalate this to the Public Service Commission. Still awaiting resolution and affirmation from Con Ed.

If you are a customer, as I have described, CHECK YOUR BILL carefully... as the website update may have confused the details of your account.

In the past 10 years my family and I have been ignored on the lack of power provided to my residence due to lack of communication. I have contacted Con Edison year after year, day after day and never givenbthe respect of fixing this issue. My lights, air conditioner, televisions and refrigerator turn off every two to three minutes. This is not what one would call a good quality of life. Today I spent 25 minutes on the phone with a representative that had no clue about the matter and when asked to speak with a supervisor she said he will call me back. When I asked when are they going to dispatch a field operation specialists she had no clue. Not that this is any of fault but again lack of communication. In 35 years I have never missed a billing cycle and never received a phone call for a missed or late payment. So in respect to me always making sure my bill is paid why is it that even after 10 years of complaints Con Edison can’t fix mt power shortage problem.

My family has lived next to the 14 street con Edison plant for about 35 years and as of 2020 3 family members have colon cancer. I have been informed there are quite a number of people with cancer in the neighborhood.
